The route, drawn out

  1. Day one Start as an apprentice from £15.6k
  2. 1 year Fully qualified around £22k
  3. +3–5 years Experienced up to £30k

The first figures are legal minimums: the apprentice rate (£8.00/hr) and the National Minimum Wage for 18–20s and 21+ from April 2026, on a 37.5-hour week. Qualified and experienced pay are indicative UK ranges — most employers pay apprentices above the minimum.

What the job is

Retail is dismissed as a stopgap, which underrates it. The apprenticeship covers product knowledge, selling, stock control, loss prevention, merchandising and the legal side of selling age-restricted goods — and it puts you in front of a supervisor who decides promotions.

The supermarkets and large chains are among the biggest apprenticeship employers in the country, and internal promotion is genuinely fast: store management in your twenties is normal rather than exceptional. Specialist retail — butchery, bakery, pharmacy, trade counters — pays better and builds a transferable craft skill alongside.

A typical day

  • Serve customers and handle transactions accurately
  • Maintain stock levels, rotation and availability
  • Merchandise displays and keep the sales floor presentable
  • Follow age-restriction, security and loss-prevention rules
  • Handle complaints and returns calmly

How you get in

  • No formal qualifications required
  • Availability for weekends and early or late shifts
  • You must be 18+ to sell alcohol unsupervised in most settings
  • Reliability matters more than exam results

Where it leads

  • Team leader or supervisor (level 3), then store manager
  • Specialise in butchery, bakery, pharmacy or trade counter sales
  • Buying, merchandising or supply chain roles at head office
  • Moving into a trade via a builders merchant or motor factor
