What the job is

Customer service apprenticeships exist in banks, utilities, councils, garages, builders merchants and call centres. You learn to handle complaints, work systems quickly, and take ownership of a problem to the end.

It is a common first rung for people who want office work without a degree, and it transfers unusually well: the same skills lead into account management, sales, operations or HR. Many employers use it to bring people in and then move them sideways into the part of the business they fit.

A typical day

  • Answer calls, emails and messages within service targets
  • Resolve complaints and escalate what you cannot fix
  • Use CRM and order systems accurately
  • Explain products, charges and timescales clearly
  • Record interactions so colleagues can pick up the thread

How you get in

  • Usually GCSE grade 3-4 (D-C) in English and maths, or Functional Skills
  • Clear speaking and writing
  • Patience — you meet people on a bad day
  • Some employers use a short phone or written assessment

Where it leads

  • Customer service specialist (level 3)
  • Team leader or supervisor, then operations management
  • Account management, sales or complaints specialist roles
  • Moving into HR, credit control or business administration
