What the job is

Early years educators plan and deliver activities, observe and record development, and keep young children safe and thriving. Level 3 is the qualification that counts for staffing ratios, which is why qualified educators are in demand everywhere.

Nursery settings recruit apprentices continually. It is emotionally rewarding and physically tiring work, and it leads naturally into room leadership, SEN support, teaching assistant roles or primary teaching.

A typical day

  • Plan and deliver play-based learning activities
  • Observe, record and support children's development
  • Safeguard children and follow welfare requirements
  • Support personal care, feeding and routines
  • Build relationships with parents and carers

How you get in

  • Usually GCSE grade 4 (C) in English and maths is needed to count in ratios at level 3
  • Enhanced DBS check is mandatory
  • Patience, energy and warmth
  • Paediatric first aid training is provided

Where it leads

  • Room leader, then nursery manager (level 5)
  • SEN coordinator or early years teacher status
  • Teaching assistant and primary school roles
  • Childminding or opening your own setting
