What the job is
Refinishing is as much chemistry and colour science as spraying. You will strip and prepare panels, apply primers and fillers, mix and match paint to a code that may have drifted with age, then blend the repair into surrounding panels.
It is a skilled, clean-ish trade with strong demand and a clear route into estimating or running a shop. Water-based paint systems and low-bake ovens have changed the technology substantially in recent years.
A typical day
- Prepare, fill, sand and mask panels for refinishing
- Mix and colour-match paint using formulation systems
- Apply primers, base coats and lacquers in a spray booth
- Blend repairs into adjacent panels invisibly
- Polish, finish and quality-check the result
How you get in

- Patience and a methodical approach to preparation
- Health screening for isocyanate exposure is standard
