The first figures are legal minimums: the apprentice rate (£8.00/hr) and the National Minimum Wage for 18–20s and 21+ from April 2026, on a 37.5-hour week. Qualified and experienced pay are indicative UK ranges — most employers pay apprentices above the minimum.

What the job is

Driving is the quickest route from no qualification to a well-paid skilled job. The apprenticeship gets you a category C or C+E licence, the Driver CPC, and real experience with an employer who wants to keep you.

The national driver shortage has pushed pay up considerably, and there is enormous variety: supermarket distribution, construction tipper work, tankers, ADR hazardous goods, or owner-driver work. Hours can be long and night trunking is common, but so are four-day weeks.

A typical day

  • Plan routes, check loads and complete daily walkaround checks
  • Drive safely and economically within drivers' hours rules
  • Load, secure and unload goods correctly
  • Use tachograph and telematics systems properly
  • Deal with customers and delivery paperwork

How you get in

  • You must be 18+ and hold a full car licence
  • Provisional category C entitlement plus a medical
  • No academic requirements — attitude and a clean licence matter
  • Driver CPC (35 hours every five years) is a legal requirement

Where it leads

  • Category C+E (artic) and then specialist licences
  • ADR (hazardous goods), tanker or abnormal load work
  • Transport supervisor or manager (Certificate of Professional Competence)
  • Owner-driver, then running your own vehicles
