The first figures are legal minimums: the apprentice rate (£8.00/hr) and the National Minimum Wage for 18–20s and 21+ from April 2026, on a 37.5-hour week. Qualified and experienced pay are indicative UK ranges — most employers pay apprentices above the minimum.

What the job is

The registered nurse degree apprenticeship delivers the same NMC-approved degree as the university route, but you are employed by a trust or care provider throughout and your tuition is funded.

It takes about four years full-time (shorter if you are already a nursing associate), mixing academic study with supervised practice placements. Competition is real, but for people who cannot afford three years without income, it is the difference between nursing and not nursing.

A typical day

  • Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care
  • Administer medicines and manage complex conditions
  • Work within multidisciplinary teams across settings
  • Supervise and support junior staff and students
  • Maintain professional standards and revalidation

How you get in

  • Usually level 3 qualifications (A-levels, T Level or Access) plus GCSE English, maths and science at grade 4/C
  • You must secure an employed apprentice post with a healthcare provider
  • Enhanced DBS and occupational health clearance
  • Competitive selection including values-based interview

Where it leads

  • NMC registration as a registered nurse
  • Specialist practice: critical care, theatres, community, mental health
  • Advanced clinical practitioner or nurse prescriber
  • Clinical leadership, education or research roles
