What the job is

Dental nursing is one of the most reliable earn-while-you-learn routes in healthcare. You will assist at the chair, prepare instruments and materials, manage infection control, take records and look after anxious patients.

The integrated level 3 apprenticeship leads to registration with the General Dental Council, which is a licence to practise anywhere in the UK. From there you can add radiography, oral health education, implant or orthodontic nursing, each of which raises your pay.

A typical day

  • Prepare the surgery, instruments and materials for each patient
  • Assist chairside with suction, materials and instruments
  • Maintain strict decontamination and infection control
  • Update patient records and process radiographs
  • Reassure nervous patients and explain aftercare

How you get in

  • Usually GCSE grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and a science, or equivalent
  • You need an employer — practices recruit trainee dental nurses directly
  • Enhanced DBS check and immunisations including hepatitis B
  • Calm, tidy and good with people who are frightened

Where it leads

  • GDC registration on completion — required to practise
  • Post-registration certificates in radiography, sedation or oral health education
  • Orthodontic, implant or practice management roles
  • Dental hygienist or therapist via a foundation degree
