What the job is

Plumbing is water, heat and pressure, and it is unforgiving of sloppy work — which is why properly qualified plumbers can charge what they charge. The apprenticeship covers cold and hot water, central heating, sanitation, drainage and, if you take the pathway, gas.

Domestic plumbers are constantly busy on repairs, bathrooms and boiler work. The move to heat pumps, cylinders and low-temperature heating is reshaping the trade, and plumbers who add those qualifications early are extremely well placed.

A typical day

  • Install and test hot and cold water systems and sanitaryware
  • Fit and commission central heating systems, boilers and controls
  • Run and connect pipework in copper, plastic and steel
  • Fault find on heating and water systems and repair them
  • Work to water regulations and building regulations

How you get in

  • Usually GCSE grade 3-4 (D-C) in maths and English, or Functional Skills
  • Practical aptitude and problem-solving — much of the job is diagnosis
  • A driving licence becomes essential quickly
  • Many employers run a trade test or aptitude assessment

Where it leads

  • Gas Safe registration via the gas pathway
  • Low carbon heating: heat pumps, cylinders and renewables
  • Commercial plumbing and mechanical services
  • Self-employed, or running your own plumbing and heating firm
