What the job is

Britain has some of the leakiest housing stock in Europe and a legal commitment to fix it. Insulation and building treatments operatives install cavity wall, loft, external and internal wall insulation, and increasingly work as part of whole-house retrofit teams alongside heat pump installers.

Most of the work is grant-funded, which means it is steady and paid on completion, but it is also inspected — installers need to work to PAS 2035 standards and to certification schemes. The skills shortage here is acute and is expected to last for years.

A typical day

  • Survey properties and identify the right insulation system
  • Install cavity, loft, floor and wall insulation systems
  • Fit external wall insulation, render and detailing
  • Seal, ventilate and avoid creating damp and condensation problems
  • Work to PAS 2035 and record the installation for certification

How you get in

  • No formal qualifications required for most level 2 apprenticeships
  • Comfortable working in lofts, on scaffold and in tight spaces
  • Care and accuracy: bad insulation causes damp, and it gets inspected
  • CSCS card and scheme registration for grant-funded work

Where it leads

  • Retrofit coordinator and assessor qualifications
  • External wall insulation and render systems specialist
  • Supervisor on grant-funded retrofit schemes
  • Self-employed, or expanding into heat pumps and whole-house retrofit
