The first figures are legal minimums: the apprentice rate (£8.00/hr) and the National Minimum Wage for 18–20s and 21+ from April 2026, on a 37.5-hour week. Qualified and experienced pay are indicative UK ranges — most employers pay apprentices above the minimum.
What the job is
Demolition is the opposite of building and every bit as technical. You strip out, soft-strip, remove asbestos-adjacent materials under controlled conditions, cut and burn steel, and bring structures down in a planned sequence so that nothing collapses in the wrong direction.
It is tightly regulated and card-controlled (CCDO), which keeps the trade small and the rates high. Experienced operatives move into machine operating, supervision and explosive demolition, and demand is steady because regeneration and decarbonisation both start with taking something down.
A typical day
- Soft-strip buildings and segregate materials for recycling
- Work to a written demolition method statement and sequence
- Use breakers, cutting gear and hand tools safely
- Work at height and around live services and hazardous materials
- Support machine operators as a banksman or slinger
How you get in
- You must be 18+ for most demolition work
- No formal qualifications required, but a CCDO card is essential
- Good physical fitness and a serious attitude to safety
- Asbestos awareness and face-fit testing are part of the training
Where it leads
- CCDO card progression from operative to supervisor
- Plant operator tickets — 360 excavator with demolition attachments
- Demolition supervisor, then contracts manager
- Specialist explosive demolition and high-reach machine work
