What the job is

Data technicians do the unglamorous, essential work: getting data out of systems, making it trustworthy, and turning it into reports and dashboards people actually use.

It is a short apprenticeship with a wide landing zone — analysts, engineers and BI specialists all start here — and the skills (SQL, spreadsheets, visualisation) transfer to almost any industry.

A typical day

  • Extract and combine data from different systems
  • Clean, validate and structure datasets
  • Write queries in SQL to answer business questions
  • Build dashboards and reports in tools like Power BI
  • Explain findings clearly to non-technical colleagues

How you get in

  • Usually 5 GCSEs grade 4 (C) or above including maths and English
  • Comfort with numbers and spreadsheets
  • Curiosity — good analysts ask why the number looks like that
  • Some employers set a numerical reasoning test

Where it leads

  • Level 4 data analyst apprenticeship
  • Data engineering, analytics engineering or BI development
  • Specialise in a domain — finance, health, logistics
  • Senior analyst, then analytics lead
