What the job is

This is the standard step up from the tools. A site supervisor plans the week, sequences the trades, checks the work against drawings, runs inductions and briefings, and keeps the programme and the paperwork honest.

Most supervisors come from a trade background, which is exactly why the qualification exists — it adds the planning, commercial and legal knowledge to what you already know about building. It is the recognised gateway to site management.

A typical day

  • Plan and sequence work, labour and materials week by week
  • Brief operatives and run toolbox talks and inductions
  • Check work against drawings, specifications and tolerances
  • Manage site health, safety and environmental compliance
  • Record progress, variations and delays accurately

How you get in

  • Usually a completed trade apprenticeship or several years of site experience
  • Level 2 English and maths
  • SMSTS or SSSTS supervisor safety training
  • Strong communication — you spend the day dealing with people

Where it leads

  • Site manager, then project manager
  • HNC/HND or degree apprenticeship in construction management
  • Contracts manager for a main contractor
  • Moving into quantity surveying, planning or health and safety
