The first figures are legal minimums: the apprentice rate (£8.00/hr) and the National Minimum Wage for 18–20s and 21+ from April 2026, on a 37.5-hour week. Qualified and experienced pay are indicative UK ranges — most employers pay apprentices above the minimum.

What the job is

Barbering has grown enormously, and good barbers are busy. The apprenticeship covers clipper work, scissor cutting, fades, beard shaping and traditional wet shaving, plus the consultation skills that turn a haircut into a regular client.

Start-up costs are low: a chair rental and a set of tools. Many barbers go self-employed within two or three years, and shop owners often start as apprentices in the same chair.

A typical day

  • Consult and agree cuts with clients
  • Cut and fade using clippers, scissors and razors
  • Shape and trim beards and moustaches
  • Perform traditional wet shaves safely
  • Maintain strict hygiene and tool sterilisation

How you get in

  • No formal qualifications required for most level 2 apprenticeships
  • Steady hands and an eye for symmetry
  • Building rapport is half the job
  • Trade tests or trial days are common

Where it leads

  • Advanced barbering (level 3)
  • Chair rental, then your own shop
  • Educator or brand ambassador work
  • Adding hair systems, colour or grooming services
